Aloe

The natural habitats for Aloe species are Africa, Arabia and Madagascar, and some types are very small while others grow large like trees. Most varieties are likely to flower as house plants in colors of the orange and red ranges, but some are green or yellow. As house plants they will do very well in east or west window locations and they grow mostly in the fall, blooming in early winter and then growing a little in the spring. Most species need to have a little water every week all year round, and some varieties grow in the summer months, while others tend to grow in the winter. Being set outdoors for the summer season they will tolerate very hot weather, but care must be taken to avoid giving them too much sun. Most species will take lots of rain, and they need to be returned indoors when there is any danger of frost. Some of the largest growing species need more light in the winter than most indoor locations can provide, but the smaller growing species make some of the best four seasons house plants.
