This generic is often found growing in greenhouses as a single stem with the name 'Road Kill Cactus' because of the shape, texture and color of their pads. The native habitat for these cacti are beautiful tropical regions like Florida and the Caribbean. They have a 'Prickly Pear Cactus' look without spines, and can grow into a very large tree like forms. Their flower colors are fugitive from yellows into reds, but it would be almost impossible to stimulate them into making flowers as house plants. They are best grown outdoors in subtropical to tropical regions and require lots of warmth and sun. Consolea make interesting novelty house plants especially because they are spineless, and at least they are fun because of their 'Road Kill Cactus' name.
