This genus grows in the south western United States and Mexico. They have a reputation for having some of the most impressive and beautiful spines of any group of cacti, but it is very difficult for most varieties to bloom as house plants. They will do their best with lots of sun, but also have a surprising tolerance for low light conditions in winter. They are great as plants to put outdoors in the growing season and returned indoors where they need to be kept completely dry for their winter rest.
